What is a Labrador Retriever like?

Labrador Retrievers are not the number one pet in the world for no reason. They are one of the most easy-going dogs around, are highly-affectionate, all whilst possessing an abundance of energy. Labrador Retrievers love being around people, and do well as family pets. They enjoy the presence of children, especially those who can keep up with their exuberance.

Whilst equipped with an athletic frame, they are quicker to love than to fight. Highly affectionate, these dogs never fail to tell you how much they love you. They crave attention, and especially values the time spent together with their owners. Living with a Labrador is one of the most rewarding, and life-changing experience anyone can ever have. Just ask Josh Grogan, owner of Marley, perhaps the most famous Labrador Retriever n the world.

Labrador Retriever Adoption Notes

Quick Summary

  • Labrador Retrievers have great appetites, and quite simply love to eat. Their enjoy the occasional dog kibbles and biscuits. Labrador Retrievers especially love human food, and are quick to pounce on any table scraps pet owners might leave them.
  • Yet, their love for food extends beyond just edible items. If you have kids in the house, their toys are most likely to be filled with bite marks. And even then, that’s still not the worst case. Labrador Retrievers would even scavenge through loose trash lying around, looking for things to nibble on. Pet adopters should remember to secure their trash bags before leaving the house, or risk coming back to a place scattered with litter.
  • Matching their enormous appetite is their equally large desire for exercises. Labrador Retrievers are working dog breeds that were historically bred for high-octane activities. This trait has not whittled over the years. Healthy adult Labrador Retrievers require at least an hour of high intensity exercises on a daily basis.

yQuick Summary

  • The liveliness of Labrador Retrievers have become a reputation by itself. Indeed, it is rather endearing, with a happy-go-lucky ball of energy being always by your side. However, they will not always be like that. As Labrador Retrievers gradually age, their energy levels start to diminish. So take advantage of their good healthy years and play with them as much as possible.
  • Labrador Retrievers are not the most popular dog in the world without a reason. They are friendly, sociable, and eager to please. However, this does not mean that you should let them be. Just like any other dogs, house training them when they are young would lead to good habits that would last their entire lives.
  • Labrador Retrievers might not be as chronic an escape artist as the Siberian Husky. However, with the right triggers, such as the smell of a yummy treat, they can get to action real quick, digging themselves a hole or jumping over fences. You would do well to keep a tight watch over your Labrador Retrievers.

Testimonials: Labrador Retriever

Healthy Dogs

The dogs were healthy, no tear stains and looked happy. This was the only place that they happily let us play with the dogs (after cleaning our hands) and spend as much time as possible without any hard sell. We set our eyes on this Labrador Retriever and was really happy to have adopted it from this place.

We came here after going to a number of other pet shops, the Pasir Ris farms and Sungei Tengah. Nicole was warm, knowledgeable, friendly and above all else obviously care for the dogs. We decided to get a Labrador Retriever after talking to her.

CONSIDERATION: PROS

A Labrador Retriever is perfect if you want a dog who…

Is Cheerful:

Labrador Retrievers are always optimistic, and is always there for you, cheering you up no matter what happens

IS Trainable

Labrador Retrievers are responsive to training methods, which makes them easy to housebreak.

Is Peaceful

Whilst they may not be the most sociable, Labrador Retrievers coexist with other dogs rather well.

Is Low-Maintenance

Labrador Retrievers have short coats which make them easy to maintain. They do not require frequent brushing.

Tips: Safe Spot

Labrador Puppies need a sense of protection. Everything is foreign at first, and that can be rather intimidating. That’s why you see them always by the side of their owners. That’s who they are most comfortable being with. However, inevitably, they will be times when the owner leaves the house. To prevent separation anxiety, you can create a comfort den for the puppy. It goes a long way in providing them with a sense of security. Furnish this den with their personal belongings like their favourite toys. It makes the place more personal. Over time, it will feel more like a home within a home for them. That’s the safe spot they’ll go to whenever they have to be alone in the house.

Tips: Excitable

There’s a saying that goes, happiness is infectious. That is extremely true in the case of Labrador Puppies. These cute little dogs can sense the energy level around them, and are easily influenced by them. They both respond and react to their environments. Whilst this may sound like a good ida, it can sometimes add on to an already big headache you have: how to deal with the liveliness of your Labrador Retriever. As such, pet adopters might need to learn to control their excitement when in the same room as their Labrador Retriever puppies. Otherwise, these dogs can go in a frenzy, and provide a lot more energy and running about than you are ready for.

ConsideratiOn: CONS

Don’t get a Labrador Retriever if you don’t want to deal with its…

Health Conditions

Labrador Retrievers require lots of care and attention, as they are more prone to developing health problems.

Exuberance

Their energy levels might be too much for some owners, especially those who need a lot of quiet time at home.

Activity

Daily exercises are a must. If not taken out frequently, Labrador Retrievers could turn rather destructive.

Shedding

Whilst they have short coats, Labrador Retrievers still shed a healthy amount. You may find their fur all over your clothes.

Appearance

Labrador Retrievers are athletic and well-built dogs which come in three different colours. Namely chocolate, black or yellow. Recently however, there has been the birth of Silver Labradors, which take on a more greyish tone.

They are medium in size, neither too large and intimidating nor too small and fragile. They have large skulls with well-defined noses and eyes that are usually brown or hazelnut in colour. Labrador Retrievers have hanging ears, and a tail that is distinctly unique. Medium in size, the tails flows nicely from head to tip and achieves balance in the water.

Basic profile of a Labrador Retriever

Activity

01. Exercise Requirements

Whilst it might be tempting to think of the Labrador Retriever as a couch potato, given their status as the most popular family pet, that is far from the truth. In fact, Labrador Retrievers are highly energetic dogs who require healthy amounts of high intensity exercises every day. More than just leisurely walks, Labrador Retrievers will only be satisfied if they get to run around a lot. Hiking trips are their favourites.

Keep your Labrador Retriever active and let them exert their vigour. Otherwise, when kept at home for too long, your furniture and other belongings might be ultimately be the victim to all their pent-up energy.

Fitness

03. Potential Health Issues

Yearly screenings by your veterinarian is necessary to keep your Labrador Retrievers healthy and happy. Problems detected at an early stage is much less fatal, and more treatment plans are available.

These dogs are naturally deep-chested, which makes them prone to a medical condition called float. Whilst it manifest itself as just the overconsumption of water in humans, it is much more dangerous in dogs. It could be caused by a swollen or twisted stomach, with which immediate emergency action needs to be taken. To reduce the chances of bloat, always monitor the diet of your Labrador Retrievers closely.

Breaking In

02. Obedience Training Style

This is where their high energy pays off. Combined with their natural eagerness to please, Labradors Retrievers can be easy to break in. They are highly receptive to different house breaking methods. Socialising training should also be done when they are still puppies, It helps teaches them proper social behaviours when around humans and other dogs.

Agility trainings are ideal for them. It not only helps them keep in shape by shedding off the excess calorie they might have stolen behind your back, it also serves as an avenue for them to release their excess energy.

diet

04. Nutritional Requirements

Since they are so active, these Labrador Retrievers have caloric requirements similar to that of a German Shepherd. They typically require around 1,500 to 1,900 calories a day.

Like with most other dogs, high protein and fat components should be present in their diet. Labrador Retrievers aren’t picky eaters, so they do well with just about any food. However, pet adopters should avoid feeding them fruits like grapes and raisins, or other vegetables like avocado, eggplant, onions and chives. These contain chemical and other ingredients that are harmful to these dogs.
