Puppy Adoption Singapore

Siberian Huskies are a free-spirited breed who are happy to be around people. Built with an athletic body, these dogs love to get a good run out in the outdoors. Huskies should be taken for a walk, run, or hike every day.

Temperament

What is a Siberian Husky like?

Siberian Huskies has a wolf-like appearance that is most striking to those who first set eyes on them. However, they are rather high maintenance, whilst being notoriously difficult to housebreak. All these can pose significant challenges to new owners.

Historically used as working dogs, Siberian Huskies are built to run for hours. They are going to be disgruntled if they were made to sit in a house for long periods of time. These dogs  require a consistent channel to expend their energy, so this means at least one hour of outdoor aerobic exercises every day. Leisure walks in the neighbourhood simply won’t make the cut with these dogs.

The prey drive is also strong in these Siberian Huskies. This makes coexisting with other smaller animals, such as cats, rather difficult. Their first instinct would be to chase them around, and not in a playful manner too.

Yet, despite all this, owning a Siberian Husky is ultimately a deeply enriching and rewarding experience. Just ask any current Husky owner. The natural exuberance of these dogs will light up your lives and add so much more colour to them.

Siberian Husky Adoption Notes

Quick Summary

  • Siberian Huskies generally do not shed much through the year. However, during certain seasons, they will shed a substantial amount of their coat all at once. This usually happens in June and July, on the hottest days of the year.
  • As a dog that’s breed to survive in the wild, Siberian Huskies generally do not do well living in a small apartment. They do better with a more spacious environment where they can move freely around in.
  • Even with a larger environment, Siberian Huskies are still prone to attempting escape. After all, they are renowned escape artists, notorious for jumping out of fences and breaking out of chains. Pet adopters should be prepared to build high and long fences that have their foundations at least a few inches into the ground.

yQuick Summary

  • Siberian Huskies are rather quiet, and are not loud barkers like some other of the other smaller dog breeds. This can be a pro, if you have many neighbours living in the vicinity. It could also be a con however, since they will make for rather poor watchdogs.
  • As a dog that’s more used to the natural environment, Siberian Huskies can be rather difficult to train. Even with obedience training, it can be a challenge to turn these energetic pups into well-behaved adults. As such, they are not ideal for first-time dog owners.
  • There is a low risk of these Siberian Huskies suffering from obesity, since they are genetically predisposed to survive on low amounts of food. These dogs do well with just minimal daily calories intake, despite their relatively large frames.

CONSIDERATION: PROS

A Siberian Husky is perfect if you want a dog who…

Is Wolf-Like:

Huskies have an appearance that resembles a wolf. Perfect for those who want a furry wolf-like companion.

IS Athletic

These dogs love to play, and can run for hours. They are definitely an outdoor kind of dog.

IS Free Spirited

Siberian Huskies have minds of their own. Yet, nothing beats their love of playing around with their owners.

Is a Good Hiker

Siberian Huskies are the perfect companion for owners who are always up for adventurous trips and hikes.

Tips: Chewing

Siberian Huskies, like most other dogs, are big on chewing. If kept unoccupied for long periods of time, they can leave a trail of destruction around the house. Chew toys are therefore an essential accessory that goes a long way in keeping everything sane and orderly in your house. With that said, it is still important for you to monitor what you leave around the house. Don’t make the mistake of leaving your washing basket exposed to these ever-curious Huskies.

Tips: Strolls

Whilst they may have a wolf-like appearance that could appear menacing, Siberian Huskies serve as really poor guard dogs. In fact, they have gained a reputation for being the kind of dog who would more likely help burglars rob you than to deter them. If your sole purpose in adopting a dog is for them to function as a watchdog, you would do well looking for other dog breeds. In fact, small breeds such as Chihuahuas, can serve as even more vocal deterrences than the Siberian Husky.

ConsideratiOn: CONS

Don’t get a Siberian Husky if you don’t want to deal with its…

Trail Of Destruction

You might come home one day and realise that your house has been turned inside out by a rather bored Siberian Husky.

Chase instincts

Avoid these dogs if you already have other small pets. Your cat will spend all day trying to escape from your new Husky.

Athletic Needs

Siberian Huskies are built to run for hours on end. You will need to provide them with lots of exercises everyday.

Escape Tendencies

The David Copperfield of the dog world, Siberian Huskies are known to dig through yards as they try to escape.

Coexisting with a Siberian Husky

Appearance

Siberian Huskies are one of the dog breeds whose appearance closely resembles that of a wolf. They can come in a variety of different colours, from pure white, to pure black, and everything in between.

Like the Pomeranian, Siberian Huskies also have two layers of coat. The top layer is made up of straight and long guard hair that helps the skin to breathe in warm weather, whilst the undercoat is soft and fluffy. Since Singapore is has a warm climate all year round, most Siberian Huskies found here either have very thin or practically non-existent undercoats.

Basic profile of a Siberian Husky

Activity

01. Exercise Requirements

Siberian Huskies were historically bred to help sledders in the cold northern climate do work. Whilst the demand for this particular function of theirs has declined over the years, their instincts for high-octane activities still remain.

Similar to other work dogs, Siberian Huskies require a high volume of of daily exercises. They are the happiest when they get to run around. So take them out to a spacious area, whether that’s your local park, garden, or even a specially built dog corners. And don’t expect them to simply walk at a leisurely pace. You probably have to run just to keep up with them.

tness

03. Potential Health Issues

Generally, the Siberian Husky is a healthy dog breed with very few serious health concerns. They do suffer from the occasional health issues such as hypothyroidism, cataract, and corneal dystrophy. Yet more often than not, there are  minor problems that can be easily treated.

Just like any other dogs however, pet adopters should take their Siberian Huskies to the veterinarian at least once every year. This ensures that they are in good conditions. Even if not, by detecting the problems early, it can set up the path for more effective and timely treatment methods.

Breaking In

02. Obedience Training Style

Siberian Huskies can be a real challenge to work with. Due to their natural affinity with the wild, it will take some time before they are properly housebroken to follow all the rules. During this time, it is important to exercise a little patience with them, all whilst being firm with what you ask of them.

First time pet adopters might find it slightly overwhelming at the start. If so, do not hesitate to engage the help of a professional obedience trainer who has had previous experience working with Siberian Huskies.

04. Nutritional Requirements

Whilst it is true that Siberian Huskies are not overly picky with what they eat, and can sustain on low calorie intake, crafting a proper diet is still important. High quality food is still essential for a healthy development of their coats.

However, they do require lower protein in their meals than other dogs. Especially in Singapore, where summer is practically all year round, their daily protein requirement is just 20%, compared to 32% in other temperate countries. For more personalised advice, it is best to consult with your veterinarian.
